Celebrate the art of living beautifully during a special hosted weekend at Half-Mile Farm with renowned floral designer and author Laura Dowling. Known for her elegant, garden-inspired creations and her time as Chief Floral Designer at the White House, Laura brings her signature blend of creativity, charm, and storytelling to this exclusive event.
Friday evening from 5 - 6 pm at Social Hour, Laura will be on hand to meet guests and sign copies of her latest book, “Designing Christmas: Practical Tips for Festive Decor,” and Half-Mile Chef Jason Tardo will present complimentary hors d’oeuvres along with specialty cocktails available for purchase in the J. Henry Farmhouse Tavern and live music from Paul Jones until 8pm.
Saturday from 4 - 5 pm in the Woodland View Room, Laura will present an engaging talk on floral design and inspiration, and a peek into her journey from small-town roots to arranging blooms for world leaders. Whether you're a flower enthusiast, design lover, or simply curious, this weekend promises to bloom with beauty, conversation, and seasonal splendor.
About Laura Dowling:
Laura Dowling is a celebrated floral designer, author, and speaker renowned for her innovative approach to floral artistry. From 2009 to 2015, she served as the Chief Floral Designer at the White House, where she was responsible for creating floral arrangements for thousands of events, including state dinners, receptions, and holiday celebrations. Her signature style blends classical inspiration with a modern aesthetic, characterized by lush blooms, entwining vines, and surprising combinations of colors and textures.
Dowling's journey into floral design began during a trip to Paris, where she was captivated by the beauty of French floral arrangements. This experience led her to study at the École des Fleuristes de Paris, and eventually transition from a career in public policy to one in floral design. She is the author of several books, including Floral Diplomacy at the White House and A White House Christmas, which offer insights into her experiences and the role of flowers in conveying diplomatic messages The Flower Podcast. Today, Dowling continues to share her passion for floral design through speaking engagements, workshops, and collaborations, inspiring others with her unique vision and artistic passion.
